Francis Robinson died in Air Force fighter jet crash
• No Name: “On the letter by Fred L. Riggin III, who wanted to change the name of Sanborn Park to Francis J. Robinson Memorial Park.
I wouldn’t have a problem with that.
The thing I’m wondering is it says in the headline ‘Name park for Robinson who died in jet crash.’
It’d be nice if the Times Herald would write a little article about who Francis J. Robinson was, what plane crash he died in and so forth.”
Francis J. Robinson was a Port Huron High School graduate and a talented athlete.
He played on the varsity football and basketball teams, and in 1950, he and Fred Riggin won the city recreation department’s tennis tournament.
Robinson earned his pilot’s license when he was 16.
He joined the U.S. Air Force and distinguished himself as a navigator and pilot.
On July 16, 1958, his F-100 Supersabre jet crashed during a gunnery practice mission at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, and he was killed.
His wife gave birth to a son on the day of his funeral.
Maj. William Sanborn, by the way, fought in the Civil War and was a hero of the Battle of Chickamauga in Tennessee, where his troops were credited with turning the tide of the war and ultimately resulting in the Union victory.
